David Fletcher

David Fletcher is an award-winning photographer based in the New Forest National Park in the UK, but he grew up in the industrial Midlands in the city of Stoke-on-Trent, famed for its potteries. His interest in photography was kindled at an early age by his father, a printer, who was himself a keen photographer and set up a darkroom the family bathroom. During school holidays he worked as an assistant in a photography studio and experienced all the processes of commercial photography. His family worked in the steel, coal and pottery industries and David experienced these tough environments first hand in temporary jobs, something which fuelled his interest in documentary photography.

Photography was not an available career choice however, so a career in technology followed. David returned to photography in later life, having always retained an amateur interest. In 2017 he won the Documentary Prize in the British Life Photography Awards and an RPS Gold Medal as Documentary Photographer of the Year.
